Join Zero Waste Week: 5 Challenges to Reset Your Waste Habits This September

Are you ready to make a difference this September? Zero Waste Week is just around the corner and it’s the perfect opportunity to reset your habits, reduce your environmental impact and inspire those around you to rethink waste.

At Evolve Waste Solutions, we’re proud to support Zero Waste Week and everything it stands for. This annual campaign, taking place in the first full week of September (1st – 5th), empowers individuals, households and businesses to take simple, effective steps toward reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

To help you get started, we’ve put together 5 achievable challenges for Zero Waste Week that can kickstart lasting habits without overwhelming your daily routine.

What Is Zero Waste Week?

Zero Waste Week is a global campaign that raises awareness about the environmental impact of waste and offers practical ways to reduce it. It began in the UK in 2008 and has since grown into an international movement, encouraging people everywhere to take responsibility for their waste footprint.

Whether you’re a zero waste novice or already have a few eco-habits under your belt, this is your chance to go a step further one action at a time.

5 Zero Waste Challenges to Try This September:

1. The One-Bag Challenge

Goal: Only use one bin bag for all your general waste this week

This challenge forces you to become more mindful of what you’re throwing away. Try separating recyclables, food scraps (for composting) and reusables first. You’ll be surprised at how much doesn’t belong in the bin when you pay close attention.

Pro tip: Set up a mini sorting station in your kitchen for easy separation.

2. Single-use Plastic-Free for a Week

Goal: Say no to single-use plastics for 7
days

Swap out plastic bottles, cling film and plastic bags for reusable alternatives. It’s easier than it sounds. Think water bottles, beeswax wraps and tote bags. Bonus: You’ll likely save money in the long run.

Quick swaps:

  • Use a reusable water bottle (try the Honest Bottle for a lightweight reusable, but made from recycled single-use bottles!)
  • Bring your own containers for takeaway food
  • Avoid items with excessive packaging

3. 5-Day Leftovers Challenge

Goal: Create 5 meals this week using leftovers or ingredients you already have

Food waste is a huge contributor to climate change. This challenge pushes you to get creative in the kitchen and reduce waste at the same time.

Tip: Plan your meals around what’s already in the fridge or pantry.

4. The Declutter & Donate Day

Goal: Spend one day decluttering, but instead of tossing, donate or repurpose.

Go through your wardrobe, garage or kitchen and identify items that can be reused by others. Clothes, electronics, furniture, even half-used paint tins could have a second life elsewhere.

Try Vinted, Freecycle, Facebook Marketplace or your local charity shop.

5. Zero-Waste DIY Swap

Goal: Replace one disposable product with a DIY or low-waste version

Try making your own cleaning spray, deodorant or coffee scrub. Not only will you cut down on packaging, but you’ll also reduce exposure to unnecessary chemicals.

Easy starter: Mix white vinegar + water + lemon peel for a natural surface cleaner.

Why It Matters

Every small action adds up. When thousands
of people commit to reducing waste during Zero Waste Week, it sends a strong
message to brands, governments and communities. Waste reduction isn’t about
perfection, it’s about progress.

At Evolve Waste Solutions, we believe in practical, achievable sustainability. Whether you’re an individual looking to live more consciously or a business aiming to meet your ESG goals, these small challenges can lead to big results.
