What is Simpler Recycling?
Introduced in 2023 by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), Simpler Recycling is designed to eliminate confusion about what can and can’t be recycled, making bin day easier for everyone.
By 31st March 2025, all businesses and non-household premises with 10 or more full-time employees must separate plastic, paper, card, glass, metals (such as cans, tins, and foil) and food waste from general waste. This initiative aims to save valuable resources and support the circular economy in the UK.
These regulations apply to businesses, schools, hospitals and similar premises, regardless of how many employees are on-site at one time. For instance, even if a business has multiple locations with fewer than 10 employees at each site, it still must comply with Simpler Recycling if the total number of employees exceeds 10 across all locations.
What if my business has less than 10 employees?
Businesses with fewer than 10 employees have until 31st March 2027 to comply (subject to legislative confirmation).
March 2025
Business with 10 employees or more must adopt a Simpler Recycling Initiative.
March 2026
Local Authorities must provide service to households that conform to Simpler Recycling initiative.
March 2027
All businesses including those with less than 10 employees will need to adopt Simpler Recycling Initiative.
