Halloween is one of the UK’s biggest, and most wasteful, seasonal moments. Millions of pumpkins are bought every October, the vast majority carved for a few days of display, and then thrown away. Here’s why that matters, and what to do instead.
The scale of the problem
Pumpkins are grown as food, but the overwhelming majority bought in the UK each October are used purely for decoration and never eaten. A huge volume ends up in general waste bins immediately after Halloween, where, like other organic material, it breaks down in landfill and produces methane rather than being put to any use at all.
Why “it’s natural, it’ll just rot down fine” is misleading
Pumpkin flesh does biodegrade – but landfill isn’t compost. Without oxygen, organic waste in landfill breaks down anaerobically, releasing methane rather than simply returning harmlessly to soil. The environmental impact is real, even though the material itself is completely natural.
Better options this Halloween
- Compost it. If you have a home compost bin or council food waste collection, pumpkins are ideal material – seeds, flesh and skin all break down well.
- Eat it. Pumpkin flesh works in soups, roasts, curries and purées; seeds can be roasted for a snack. Carving doesn’t have to mean waste, carve the design into the skin only and keep the flesh for the kitchen.
- Feed it to animals. Some farms and animal sanctuaries accept post-Halloween pumpkin donations, worth checking locally before binning.
- Check your council’s food waste guidance. Under Simpler Recycling, more households than ever now have a food waste collection specifically designed for exactly this kind of organic material.

For businesses
Any business using pumpkins for seasonal displays or events i.e. retail, hospitality, offices, faces the same question at scale. If you’re ordering pumpkins in bulk for a Halloween promotion, it’s worth planning the “after” as carefully as the “before”: a food waste collection route, a composting arrangement, or a donation partnership, rather than a skip on 1 November.
A few small decisions now mean this year’s pumpkins do a lot more than sit on a doorstep for a week.
