Happy Recycle Week! To mark it, we’re tackling the myths that quietly sabotage good intentions. Recycling wrong isn’t usually about laziness, it’s about misinformation. Here are six of the biggest.
Myth 1: “If in doubt, chuck it in the recycling anyway”
This habit even has a name – wishcycling. It feels responsible, but a single contaminated item (a greasy container, a half-full drink) can cause an entire load to be rejected and sent to landfill or incineration instead. When in doubt, check, don’t guess.
Myth 2: Pizza boxes are always recyclable
Clean cardboard, yes. Grease-stained cardboard, no – the oil breaks down the paper fibres during reprocessing. Tear off and bin the greasy bottom, recycle the clean lid.
Myth 3: Black plastic can’t be recycled anywhere
This was true for a long time, because sorting machines couldn’t detect black pigment. Newer facilities increasingly can, but it varies by area and provider, so it’s worth checking rather than assuming either way.
Myth 4: All plastic is created equal
The little triangle with a number inside tells you the resin type, not automatically whether it’s collected locally. PET (1) and HDPE (2) are widely recycled; others are far more limited.
Myth 5: Recycling doesn’t really make a difference
It’s easy to feel cynical about this, but the numbers say otherwise: recycled materials directly reduce demand for virgin raw materials, cut carbon emissions from manufacturing, and, done properly, genuinely do get turned into new products, not shipped off and forgotten.
Myth 6: Once it’s in the bin, it’s someone else’s problem
Businesses in particular benefit from knowing where their waste actually goes. Ask your waste management partner: is material processed locally? What’s your actual recycling rate? A “local loop” (where waste collected nearby is reprocessed nearby) cuts transport emissions and supports UK manufacturing.
The takeaway
Good recycling isn’t complicated, but it does reward a bit of curiosity. Ten minutes checking what your local authority or waste provider actually accepts will do more for your recycling rate than any amount of good intentions alone.
