Bonfire Night and Event Waste: What Venues Need to Plan For

Bonfire Night is one of the busiest dates in the events calendar for pubs, community venues, visitor attractions and hospitality businesses across the UK. Large crowds over a short window create a very particular waste challenge, and getting it wrong can mean overflowing bins, extra clean-up costs, or a mess that undoes all the goodwill your event generated.

Why Event Waste Is Different

Day-to-day commercial waste tends to follow a predictable pattern. Event waste doesn’t. A single evening can generate the same volume of waste your business might normally produce in a week, concentrated into just a few hours, and heavily weighted towards specific materials:

  • Food and drink packaging – cups, trays, napkins, wrappers
  • Glass – bottles from bar sales, often in large quantities
  • General waste – from spectators bringing their own snacks and drinks
  • Cardboard – from stalls, catering suppliers and decorations

Without the right containers in place, this surge typically ends up piled beside overflowing bins rather than properly sorted.

Planning Your Bonfire Night Waste Setup

A few things worth sorting out before the event, not during it:

  1. Order extra capacity in advance. If your venue’s usual bin allocation is sized for a normal week, it won’t cope with an event crowd. Talk to your provider about temporary additional containers.
  2. Separate glass collection is worth it. Events with bar sales generate a disproportionate amount of glass. A dedicated glass container keeps it out of general waste and reduces contamination risk.
  3. Position bins for the crowd, not the building. Think about where people will actually be standing and queuing, not just where bins normally live.
  4. Brief your staff or stewards. A few minutes of guidance on where waste should go on the night prevents a lot of sorting (and cost) after the event.

After the Event

Once the crowds have gone, a fast clear-up matters. – both for your reputation with neighbours and local authorities, and to avoid vermin or hygiene issues from food waste left overnight. If you’re running a multi-day event or expect a repeat surge (New Year’s Eve is next), it’s worth having a follow-up collection scheduled rather than waiting for your normal weekly slot.
